Another great day at the Highland Games. Thanks to the committee and the 150 volunteers who make it such a success.

Puppets Up! 2010, probably the most successful one ever.

Once again, I have enjoyed the experience of volunteering at the festival, participating in the parades on Saturday and Sunday, and watching 250 volunteers make our town a spectacular place to visit.

From the Canadian Gazette, July 22, 2010

Mary Turner, a long time volunteer with the North Lanark Agricultural Society, was surprised

when she was called to the grandstand on Sunday, July 18 to receive a certificate

and bouquet of flowers from Mississippi Mills Mayor Al Lunney and agricultural society

president Alyssa Toshack. Turner, who has volunteered with the agricultural society for

50 years, is seen here with her family and executive from the agricultural society.

Canada Day, Pakenham,2010

Happy Canada Day to all! I spent the two days celebrating with residents in Pakenham and Almonte. We participated in the parade and barbeque in Pakenham on June 30, the pancake breakfast in Pakenham on July 1, the flag raising, the car show and stage show in Almonte, then enjoyed the evening show on Parliament Hill. What a great community and country we live in!

Mayor Lunney

June is again bicycle month in Mississippi Mills. The month is jammed full of events for young and old. Even the mayor has dusted off his trusted 10-speed to hit the roads again (not literally, I hope).

It all kicks off on May 26th at 8 am at the Almonte Old Town Hall with a free bowl of seven grain cereal and some other goodies. I will be issuing a challenge to other Lanark County municipalities for a trophy entitled The Silver Chain (see below).

Check out Mississippi Mills Bicycle Month for more information. Hope to see you Wednesday morning.

Mayor Lunney and Silver Chain

Jeri and I attended a great evening of entertainment last evening at our beautiful Old Town Hall.  The combination of local talent and an amazing puppet show by La Pendue from France made an enjoyable evening for young and old. And free coffee too.

Puppets Up! will be held on the weekend of August 7,8 this summer. It’s an amazing international festival featuring puppet troupes from Russia, Taiwan, the USA and Canada. Be sure to reserve those dates.

Olympic Torch

Author: Al

The Olympic torch arrival in Almonte today was spectacular.  Hundreds of people lined the streets and the procession of Olympic vehicles, combined with the runners, was a once in a lifetime experience. Special thanks to all who made the day such a success- the Lions’ Club, the CERV volunteers, the Fire Department and Nicole Guthrie and staff from the Recreation and Culture Department.

Mixed feelings

Author: Al

Lots of things happening in our town with the 3 on 3 basketball tournament and another very successful Puppets Up! festival. However, although I was there, my thoughts were elsewhere. My eldest brother passed away on Friday night after suffering a horrendous fall on Wednesday. Peace be with you, Gerard.
